Getting the Process Started
NOTE: These are the steps we'll go through to get your
website up and running.

Website
-
1. - DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION This is merely the name you
want for your website. It must be unique. For instance, my domain name
for this site is
"PatRichley.com" You can name the website anything you wish,
provided someone else on the internet hasn't already chosen the name.
- 2. - SERVER SPACE This is the computer hard drive
space (and incoming lines) that is the physical place on the web for
"YourOrganization.com" Pat will recommend the hosting options applicable
for your website's pages. This is a little technical, so don't worry. Together
you'll set up an account with the "hosting" company.
- Pat will order this space over the phone with you and the hosting
company, and send you the information.
- The "hosting" company will require a credit card and will plan to charge that card
monthly or annually depending on the payment plan you specify.
- The "hosting" company will require a user name and password so Pat will be able to
put the pages she creates up on your web site. Pat will share this
with you, so that you can always have access to the site in case of
emergency.
- It usually takes 24-48 hours before ICAN makes the "YourOrganization.com"
available for Pat to use. That is because the directory for the
internet has to include this new web address.
-
3. - CREATING THE PAGES FOR YOUR SITE (Pat will provide this.)
- COST: $485 for 5 pages, roughly a total of 5 hours web
design service.
- Pat will provide 3 alternative designs based on your color scheme,
logo & graphics. You'll choose one, and then Pat will go from
there.
- Content for the 5 pages is up to you. However, when we start this
process, Pat will recommend something along these lines:
- common header & footer with your logo and links to the
other pages on the website.
- home page (required)
- contact page (required)
- other pages relevant to your organization.
- The pages are actually "longer" than 8 1/2 by 11 inches.
However, it's what's up on the top that really counts. That is what
will entice people to take the time to scroll down for more info.
- You'll provide .gif photos via email or on CD to
illustrate the website. Alternately, you can overnight the desired
photos to Pat and she will scan them in. Please keep in mind that
while you are accustomed to working in larger sizes, web pages must
have smaller, less detailed graphics in order for the page to load quickly on
dial-up. Don't worry, it's Pat's job to resize things. She must
consider how the webpage will load on 4 platforms with many
different web browsers. What a page looks like through
Internet Explorer is a little different from how it looks using
Netscape.
-
4.- EMAIL You will be able to set up new business
email boxes (Pat can help you with this!) something like:
- "Info@YourOrganization.com"
and you@YourOrganization.com"
are possibilities. It's up to you. You'll have 5 e-mail boxes with
the total maximum size of 1 GB. This will allow for transfer of
graphics, etc. It looks more professional when your email
address is something specialized like "@YourOrganization"
- First you will sign on the internet, perhaps with AOL, RoadRunner,
or whatever ISP you use. Then open either the free email program
MSOutlook Express or MSOutlook, to send & receive email for this
website. Another free "pop3" email software choice is Incredimail.
- Alternately, if you wish to log into a computer at the library or
an internet cafe while traveling without a laptop, you will find
your email box online with directions Pat will provide you. In
either case, we'll set up your email username and
password as you wish.
- Auto Responders: You can elect to have a special message
go out immediately to anyone who send an email, to let him know
you appreciate the inquiry, and will get back to them during normal
business hours Mon-Fri 9am-5pm Eastern US time (or whatever). That
is called an "auto-responder." You would probably
reserve this for "info@YourOrganization.com"
- You'll want to have one of your "@YourOrganization email addresses added
to your PayPal account, so all your business email and payments
will go through that company email address.
-
5. - ADDITIONAL SUPPORT Whenever you need one-on-one
tutoring, it's $45 an hour. I can anticipate you'll need help with:
- New Email Account
- Changing a class schedule each semester
- Placing new items for sale
- Processing orders or class registration & payments via PayPal.
Unlike some other web designers, I will provide you with all the
Domain Registration & Hosting Services account numbers, passwords,
instructions for FTP & Email, etc. associated with "YourOrganization.com."
That way, if something should happen to me, your website won't be
stuck in limbo. This is your website, you own it. I am
working for you on a contract basis. Don't worry if these terms sound
daunting -- after all, your organization doesn't do web page design!
So even through you don't know what to do with all this info, in a
pinch, another webmaster could come in, use the the information
and pick up the reins seamlessly. Don't worry, I intend to be around
for a long time!
- 6. - SEARCH ENGINES & DIRECTORIES On completion, Pat
will submit the names to Google and other search engines, so they will
know you exist.
- If you belong to an industry with an online directory (such as a
Bed & Breakfast), you will consider joining that service, and
paying to be on that directory as well.
- Consider paying for online advertising with Yahoo, Google, etc.
Together, we can create an attractive and functional web
presence for you and your organization.
